IntroductionThe RSPB manage the summer grazing of cattle on behalf of their owners on a large part of the washes. And the cattle perform a useful management task in the washes - they keep the grass neatly mown - so I'm happy to include some photos of them as well as the structures - the pens.Cattle being moved in the washes near Pymoor railway bridge, June 2011. Note Land Rover behind cattle is "herding" them along. Also note bridge over the OBR on the other side of the Washes. |

Suspension Bridge north sideThere is small pen immediately north of Suspension Bridge on the wash side of the NBR. It is a squareish concrete pad, with the side nearest the camera a couple of feet above the track. I believe this was once the base pad of a previous bridge at this spot, and the track was the line of the road.Seen on the 26th November 2011, possibly the latest cattle have remained grazing on the Washes, an indication of the strange weather. On the photo top right can be seen the roof of a white house on the far side of the river - Crown House, once the Crown Inn built by the Bedford Level Corporation. back to contents |
